On Friday, I performed an operation with an ENT colleague of mine to create a total ear. The young man was born without an external ear or ear canal. It took more than nine hours to create the total ear and the ear canal. With one operation, he will be able to hear much better and also have an ear to match the normal one on the other side. On my website, www.westvillageplasticsurgery.com/microtia, you can see a couple of prior patients who underwent this type of reconstruction.

The important takeaway here is that I have been performing this operation for 18 years after being trained in a fellowship on this technique. The combined technique, I have been doing for the past 8 years with an ENT surgeon, who was trained in a fellowship to create the ear canal. It’s so important to find doctors who are knowledgeable about his or her specialty because they are properly trained.  I will explore this in much more detail in a future blog.

So, whether it’s Botox or facial fillers or lasers or liposuction, it’s important to know why any doctor or nurse or healthcare provider would be any good at providing such treatments. Every treatment has benefits and risks and it’s important to know both.

The next blog will begin to address the complex aspects of cosmetic surgery!
